Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1 (January 1, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harry E. Sutton (ASN: 0-1329766), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 18 December 1950 Lieutenant Sutton was the platoon leader of a rifle platoon which was in a defensive position near Hungnam, Korea. In the late afternoon of this date Lieutenant Sutton’s platoon was attacked by an estimated enemy force of 150 men. In the initial assault, Lieutenant Sutton’s platoon suffered over 50% losses, and was forced to withdraw. Lieutenant Sutton, with complete disregard for his own personal safety and constantly under heavy enemy fire and observation, rallied and reorganized the remaining effectives in his platoon. Although all of the automatic weapons in the platoon had been lost, Lieutenant Sutton, by skillful maneuver, not only successfully stopped the enemy attack, but regained from a numerically superior enemy all the ground originally lost, and inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy. The forceful leadership, high degree of initiative, and heroism displayed by Lieutenant Sutton on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
