Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 271 (October 5, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Glen C. Sutton, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 31 July 1943. During combat operations the squad preceding the one for which Private Sutton was ammunition bearer ran out of ammunition with their bearers pinned to the ground and unable to move by enemy fire. Observing their predicament, Private Sutton, at great personal risk, carried ammunition to them across seventy-five yards of fire-swept area, assisted the gun crew and contributed materially toward overcoming the enemy resistance. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
