The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Lawrence W. Sullivan (ASN: RA-21018033), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Waegwan, Korea, on 22 September 1950. During his regiment’s advance his platoon was assigned to a mission of eliminating a force of about 50 enemy entrenched in positions threatening the regiment’s supply route. As the platoon moved into positions to assault the enemy force, accurate small arms fire fell on the lead elements, wounding the platoon leader and an enlisted man. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant First Class Sullivan moved to the platoon leader’s side, administering first aid and carried him to a covered position. He then placed his men in positions from which they could bring fire to bear on the enemy position and after signaling for the fire of his weapons squad to be lifted, led a daring assault on the enemy strong point, killing several of the enemy and dispersing the remained into the surrounding hills. Sergeant First Class Sullivan’s courageous actions, complete devotion to duty, and outstanding leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Military Service.
