Headquarters, Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces, Pacific, General Orders No. 243 (October 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Clyde P. Sullivan (ASN: 6333884), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving with the 440th Ordnance Company (Aviation), 19th Bombardment Group (Heavy), Far East Air Force, in action against the enemy at Bukidnen, Mindanao, Philippine Islands, on 21 December 1941. During the early phase of the war, the defenders of the important Del Monte Airfield had only light caliber machine guns with which to repel the enemy and when the Japanese began a heavy aerial attack on 21 December it was vitally necessary that these weapons be served with all possible promptness and efficiency. Sergeant Sullivan fearlessly and repeatedly delivered much needed ammunition to the machine gunners although enemy bombs were falling on all sides. While performing this dangerous task, he was hit and wounded by a nearby bomb burst. By his outstanding courage and dauntless devotion to duty in delivering essential ammunition at the risk of his life, Sergeant Sullivan furnished an inspiring example which is worthy of the highest traditions of the United States Army.
