The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) James A. Sudderth (ASN: 0-1310947), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 July 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. At that time Captain Sudderth, the Regimental Intelligence Officer, was unable to secure accurate information as to friendly and enemy troop dispositions during the battle for Hill 266, better known as “Old Baldy”. In order to secure this information, Captain Sudderth, with complete disregard for personal safety, crossed “Old Baldy” three times, plotting positions, identifying units and returning with the vital information which was needed for further planning in this action. During these daring missions on “Old Baldy”, he was subjected to some of the most devastating artillery, mortar and small arms fire experienced in the Korean War. Captain Sudderth’s daring actions in accomplishing his mission contributed greatly to the success of his organization and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
