The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Arlen R. Suddaby (ASN: 0-2014532), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 September 1950 near Shuam, Korea, the company with which Lieutenant Suddaby was serving as subjected to five successive attacks by a numerically superior hostile force. Repeatedly exposing himself to the deadly enemy fire, he moved about the area encouraging his men and deploying hem so as to obtain maximum results. When a heavy machine gun failed to fire, he moved to an exposed position to remedy the defect; he personally fired a light mortar when the crew became demoralized by the intensity of the attack. Throughout the protracted engagement he so inspired his men that they were able to withstand the onslaught of he foe and maintain the integrity of the company’s positions. Lieutenant Suddaby’s dauntless courage, outstanding leadership and unflinching devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
