The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Antonio Berrios-Suarez (ASN: US-50102343), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 30 September 1951, Company I was attacking a well-fortified enemy position near Chorwon, Korea, while Company K was providing support fire from a nearby hill. As the attack progressed, a hostile machine-gun entrenched in a reinforced bunker commenced with a withering hail of fire, causing numerous friendly casualties and temporarily halting the attack. Private Berrios-Suarez, a rifleman in Company K, 3d Battalion, realizing the importance of neutralizing the enemy stronghold, crawled fearlessly to a position from which he could fire directly into the hostile bunker. Pitted against the enemy machine-gun with only his M-1 rifle, Private Berrios-Suarez delivered such accurate fire into the bunker that the foe was forced to divert its attention from the advancing friendly troops and concentrate on the source of the rifle fire. For five minutes Private Berrios-Suarez singlehandedly engaged the enemy until he was struck with one of their bullets and mortally wounded. His courageous and aggressive actions enabled the attacking forces to assume more advantageous positions, from which they were able to neutralize the hostile positions and successfully accomplish their mission. Private Berrios-Suarez’ gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
