The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Cavalry) James Clyde Styron (ASN: 0-177742), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Chief of Staff of the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, in September 1943. When the Germans broke through the right flank of the 45th Infantry Division, the battalion covering that sector was cut off, and there was no Infantry between the enemy and the beach. When informed of the situation, Colonel Styron immediately moved to the threatened point and gathered artillerymen, engineers, and all available troops in the nearby vicinity. Out of this group, he formed a fighting force that under his personal leadership, successfully repulsed the attacking enemy until sufficient reinforcements arrived. His sound and aggressive leadership at a very critical time contributed materially to maintaining possession of the beach. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Styron, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
