Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 371 (August 20, 951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Orville Stumbo (ASN: RA-13350753), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 January 1951, near Sumyong-Hyon, Korea, the First Platoon of Company E, 2d Battalion, cautiously advancing up the steep treacherous slopes of the company objective, Hill 425, was stopped by a devastating hail of enemy fire. Corporal Stumbo quickly directed the movement of a machine gun to a vantage point where maximum counterfire could be placed on the hostile positions. When a machine gunner was wounded, Corporal Stumbo evacuated him to the rear for medical assistance and then returned to the weapon. Upon arrival he found that the assistant gunner had also been wounded and again he assisted a stricken soldier to the aid station and then made his way back to the gun position. Personally manning the weapon, Corporal Stumbo continued to deliver intense and accurate fire on the foe, until he was mortally wounded by a shell fragment. Corporal Stumbo’s extreme gallantry and genuine concern for the welfare of his comrades reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
