The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harold Strunk (ASN: RA-15422285), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that date his platoon was attacking high ground defended by an estimated company of enemy riflemen supported by four machine guns. When the platoon had reached the base of the hill, it was subjected to heavy hostile fire and was pinned down. Private Strunk, with complete disregard for his personal safety, advanced alone into the fire-swept terrain and single-handedly assaulted an enemy machine gun emplacement. Although he was wounded twice he continued his undaunted charge and, with automatic rifle fire, destroyed the enemy position. His heroic action relieved his platoon from heavy enemy pressure and allowed it to continue its advance with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Private Struck reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
