The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Woodrow Wilson Stromberg (ASN: 0-20728), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 19 February 1944, in Italy. When the battalion commander fell wounded during an American attack, Lieutenant Colonel Stromberg, an Allied Force Headquarters observer, took command and directed successful continuance of the attack. In German artillery, Nebelwerfer rocket and mortar fire, he went forward to the observation post, where he stayed for two hours in the crucial period of the attack in order to direct it. In that time, both his radio operator and messenger were wounded by snipers and shell bursts. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Stromberg, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
