The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Sergeant First Class] Edwin P. Straub (ASN: RA-12338704), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 22 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chisch-tong, Korea, Sergeant Straub accompanied a combat patrol deep into enemy territory. Nearing Hill 1024, the patrol was suddenly subjected to mortar, automatic weapons, and small arms fire. During the heat of battle, Sergeant Straub repeatedly exposed himself in order to direct the fire and movement of his men. When the withering hostile fire forced the patrol to make a withdrawal, Sergeant Straub single-handedly evacuated several wounded comrades. Later he rejoined his unit and efficiently directed a successful withdrawal to more tenable positions. The selfless gallantry displayed by Sergeant Straub reflects great credit upon himself and exemplifies the high traditions of the military service.
