The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John A. Strambler (ASN: 0-2262468), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 503d Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950, in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. Lieutenant Strambler’s battalion, while displacing rearward, was ambushed and subjected to intense enemy mortar, automatic weapons and small arms fire delivered from commanding ground overlooking the escape route. In the ensuing firefight, Lieutenant Strambler observed several wounded men lying under heavy fire from an enemy machine gun located on high ground off the road. Exposing himself, he took the machine gun under fire with his carbine and neutralized it long enough for a vehicle to approach, remove the wounded and carry them out of the line of fire. He then proceeded down the road, encouraging the men and assisting in reorganizing the confused and scattered troops. When all vehicles in his portion of the convoy had been destroyed, except for an anti-aircraft firing vehicle, he supervised the transfer of all wounded to this vehicle, all the while under intense enemy fire. His courageous actions and loyal concern for his wounded comrades resulted in saving the lives of several soldiers. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Strambler reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
