Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 71 (March 22, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Benny Raymond Stover (ASN: RA-13330712), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 November 1950, near Majon-ni, Korea, Sergeant Stover’s company was part of a force with the mission of making contact with the 3d Republic of Korea Marine Battalion. While traveling along the narrow mountainous road, the company came under intense automatic and small arms fire from guerrillas entrenched in the surrounding hills. The advance guard for the company was well forward when the unit was ambushed. When the order to withdraw was given, Sergeant Stover, with utter disregard for his personal safety and heedless of the great danger involved, volunteered to go forward through a heavy hail of fire to contact the advance guard and instruct it to withdraw. On his way forward he was seriously wounded, but refused medical aid. He was last seen laying down a protective base of fire, enabling the men around him to withdraw. As a result of his heroic action the lives of many men were saved. The gallant action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Stover reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
