Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 270 (July 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Donald W. Stout (ASN: RA-12348434), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 18 May 1951, Company G was given the mission of securing Hill 502 in the vicinity of Panggato, Korea. Under the leadership of Sergeant Stout, a Republic of Korea platoon was spearheading the attack up the steep, treacherous slopes. Nearing the objective, the platoon was subjected to a tremendous volume of enemy fire which halted the attack and scattered the friendly troops. Sergeant Stout unhesitatingly began moving through the withering hostile fire, supervising the platoon’s withdrawal to a more protected location. After completing this skillful maneuver, he called for and adjusted effective artillery fire upon the objective until he was assured that maximum results had been obtained. When the artillery fire was lifted, he courageously led the platoon in an assault on the enemy emplacements, inflicting numerous casualties and completely routing the enemy. Sergeant Stout’s gallant actions reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
