The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Barrie E. Storrs (ASN: 0-1017896), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Tank Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 31 August and 1 September 1950, near Changnyong, Korea. Lieutenant Storrs was in command of a section of tanks with the mission of giving supporting fire to a friendly unit which was overrun by an overwhelming enemy force. With three tanks and five infantrymen, he held the river line all night, under attack by enemy artillery, mortar, automatic weapons, and small arms fire. At 0700 hours, 1 September 1950, after losing contact with all friendly units, and realizing he was surrounded, he gave orders to withdraw to the east to tie in with friendly forces five miles to his rear. After attacking to the east for approximately 750 yards, he came upon a group of infantrymen who had been cut off. He loaded all the infantrymen into his tanks, both wounded and dead, sacrificing his fire power, and made a run through five enemy road blocks to the safety of friendly lines. Lieutenant Storrs was responsible for saving the lives of 31 men, denied the enemy the use of the road for over 12 hours, and saved three tanks for future use. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Storrs reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
