The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Clarence F. Stoeckley (ASN: 0-1304139), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 14 July 1952, while on tour of his front line companies near Sangok, Korea, Major Stoeckley was stopped and told that the road ahead was under intense enemy artillery and mortar fire and that one man was seriously wounded and still in the hazardous area. Completely disregarding his personal safety, Major Stoeckley entered this shrapnel-infested area in search of the wounded man. After locating the wounded soldier and applying first aid, Major Stoeckley carried him over the treacherous terrain to the road where he placed the man in a jeep and gave instructions for his evacuation. Told that there were two other men still in the shell-torn area, Major Stoeckley again endangered his life as he ran back to search for the missing men. While trying to locate these men, he was seriously wounded by the intense artillery fire being placed in the area by the enemy. Major Stoeckley’s outstanding gallantry and untiring devotion to duty were instrumental in saving the life of a fellow soldier and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
