The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Harlan C. Stine (ASN: 0-1010888), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 3d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 February 1951, in the vicinity of Yoju, Korea. On that date he was commanding Company L and the 2d Reconnaissance Company in setting up a roadblock on the main supply route. At 0600 hours an estimated 1,000 enemy troops attacked this task force. In the first burst of enemy mortar and small arms fire, Major Stine was wounded. With calm deliberation he ordered his forces to return the fire and defend their position. The enemy, with a numerically superior force, sought to surround the task force, and at the same time sent wave after wave of fanatical troops in a frontal attack. Major Stine realized that to remain in the area would be too costly. With complete disregard for his personal safety he led his force in a counterattack. This surprise move rocked the enemy back, but during this action Major Stine was wounded again. At 1000 hours after four hours of fighting he had moved his force out of the enemy entrapment and saved them from almost certain disaster. Major Stine’s devotion to duty, courage and leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
