Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 643 (October 28, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Donald E. Stewart (ASN: RA-15247463), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, during an attack on strategic enemy positions, Sergeant Stewart, while temporarily separated from friendly units, noticed that his squad was pinned down by intense fire from an enemy emplacement. Completely disregarding his personal safety, Sergeant Stewart assaulted the enemy bunker, firing his rifle and throwing grenades. Immediately after destroying the emplacement, heavy enemy machine gun fire was directed at him. Again, with utter disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Stewart advanced towards the enemy position with rifle fire and grenades, until he had completely destroyed the machine gun emplacement. As a result, the enemy suffered heavy casualties and his unit was able to advance and successfully accomplish its mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Stewart on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
