The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald Douglas Stewart (ASN: RA-19343959), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 15 February 1951, near Sansong-ni, Korea, a company from Private Stewart’s battalion had been in a fire fight with an estimated battalion of the enemy force in an attempt to capture Hill 520, an imposing mountain peak which commanded the area. Early in the evening communications went out. Private Stewart, a telephone lineman, voluntarily began checking the wire. He crawled up a hill in close proximity to the enemy and, although under heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire, found and repaired the break. Another break caused him to start back and recheck the line. After going but a short distance he was taken under fire by two enemy soldiers. He engaged in a fire fight with them and drove them back toward the company perimeter where they were killed. He then continued with his mission and repaired the broken line. Private Stewart’s tenacity and courage reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
