The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Denver L. Stewart (ASN: RA-45044824), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 26 May 1951, A Company’s Third Platoon was attacking three small hills held by the enemy near Ami-dong, Korea. As Sergeant Stewart led his squad toward its objective, the enemy opened fire and the lethal fusillade pinned the unit down. The initial bursts of hostile fire wounded Sergeant Stewart in the hip, but, seeing that the squad’s lead scout had also been seriously injured by the vicious blasts, he unhesitatingly began to crawl across the rock strewn terrain, lashed by hostile fire, to the stricken infantryman’s aid. Although weakened by a profuse loss of blood, Sergeant Stewart, unable to locate a medical corpsman, grasped his wounded comrade and painfully began to drag him to safety. By this slow and tedious process he conveyed the hapless soldier to a covered position behind a large boulder administering first aid, until a medical aidman arrived on the scene and a machine gun section moved forward to engage the enemy, thus allowing the squad to withdraw. Sergeant Stewart’s gallant and selfless regard for the well-being of a fellow soldier reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
