Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 26 (January 22, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Jack M. Stevens (ASN: RA-14425454), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 20 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date Corporal Stevens was serving as a Squad Leader in Company G, which was engaged in an attack on Hill 266, “OLD BALDY”. Shortly after gaining the crest of the objective and setting up their machine guns, the crew members of one gun became casualties from an enemy grenade. Braving the deadly hail of enemy fire, Corporal Stevens, immediately took over the firing of the unmanned weapon and delivered a devastating stream of fire upon the enemy until his ammunition was exhausted. He then turned to his second gun crew, which in the meantime had received two casualties from enemy grenades, and took over the firing of that weapon. A direct hit from an enemy grenade rendered this machine gun inoperative and inflicted a painful wound in his right eye. Refusing evacuation, and with complete disregard for personal safety, he ran back to the 1st Platoon, which was the second platoon in the assault, brought up one of their machine guns, and continued to gives his comrades effective fire support. When finally forced to leave his positions due to excessive bleeding and blindness, he picked up a wounded comrade and carried him to the forward aid station. After receiving first aid, he returned to his position and remained, giving invaluable fire support until his unit was relieved. His courageous actions throughout the attack were an inspiration to all who observed him and proved to be contributing factors in the success of the mission. The gallantry in action and consummate devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Stevens reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
