The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Samuel Steiger (ASN: 0-2266178), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 140th Tank Battalion, 40th Infantry Division, in action on Hill 812, Korea, during the period 2 to 4 June 1953. During a fanatical attack by enemy troops, Lieutenant Steiger, in command of a Tank Retriever, voluntarily proceeded to the scene of a disabled tank. Realizing that the disabled tank could not be moved unless repaired in position, Lieutenant Steiger, with complete disregard for his personal safety, courageously dismounted under an intense barrage of artillery, mortar and small arms fire and effected the necessary repairs, thus enabling the tank to proceed to its firing position. Approximately twelve hours later, Lieutenant Steiger again volunteered to return to the embattled hill in a dozer tank to rescue still another tank and its crew from possible capture. Upon arrival at the hill, Lieutenant Steiger gallantly dismounted under intense fire from the enemy and mounted the crew from the disabled tank into his own tank and then proceeded through enemy troops to a friendly position. Lieutenant Steiger’s inspiring example of personal bravery, heroic action and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
