The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph Stdko (ASN: 0-2008480), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. While developing a defensive position in the vicinity of Haman, Korea, on 1 September 1950, Lieutenant Stdko’s platoon was attacked by an overwhelming number of enemy forces which had maneuvered that they could effectively use hand grenades. In the face of intense hostile fire, he made his way about the platoon position to encourage his men, direct their fire and inspire them to withstand the onslaught. He was mortally wounded by enemy fire while leading his men to repulse the attack, Lieutenant Stdko’s gallant and inspiring leadership and indomitable courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
