The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Lloyd J. Stark (ASN: 0-1335592), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Stark, a platoon leader, was leading his unit in an attack upon a well-entrenched hostile force. During the ensuing action the assaulting elements encountered intense fire from a well camouflaged enemy bunker. Realizing that the success of his unit’s mission was seriously threatened by this point of determined resistance, Lieutenant Stark, left his position and single-handedly assaulted the hostile bunker. Undaunted by the heavy fire directed at him, he tenaciously advanced forward and with hand grenades successfully destroyed the hostile emplacement and killed its occupants. By his example of bravery under fire his inspired unit completely routed the enemy and secured its objective with a minimum of friendly casualties. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Stark on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
