The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Rodey D. Stapp (ASN: RA-16307926), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Am-Sin, Korea. On this date he was squad leader of a machine gun squad that was defending its position against a fanatic attack by numerically superior enemy forces. Though seriously wounded he grimly held his ground and directed an intense concentration of machine gun fire into the enemy ranks. When it became necessary for the rifle elements which his squad was supporting to withdraw, he refused to be evacuated and when last seen was still attempting to repel the attack. His gallant stand aided materially in covering the withdrawal and in securing the defensive positions of the entire battalion which was threatened with a major enemy breakthrough. Sergeant Stapp’s gallant and courageous action reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
