The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James J. Stapleton, Jr. (ASN: RA-31510447), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 12 and 15 September 1950, near Hooman, Korea, Corporal Stapleton arrived as a Medical Aidman during a series of intense hostile attacks. Moving through a heavy concentration of small arms, mortar and artillery fire, he administered first aid to the wounded and evacuated them one by one through the deadly barrage to safety. When his unit displaced leaving a wounded soldier behind, he ran and crawled through bursting shells, secured his comrade from the surrounding enemy and carried him back to friendly lines. Corporal Stapleton’s courage, determination and selfless devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army Medical Service.
