The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clair D. Stansbury (ASN: US-52001973), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 6 January 1952, while moving toward their objective of raiding and destroying a number of enemy emplacements that had been harassing friendly units near Kosansang, Korea, Company E found it necessary to cross an unknown mine field. Knowing fully the dangers involved, Sergeant Stansbury volunteered to go in advance of the Company and clear a path for it. He safely led them through the mine-infested area and as they approached their objective, they were subjected to a heavy barrage of fire. Realizing that the company was pinned down by the intense hostile fire, Sergeant Stansbury decided upon a course of action to relieve the pressure from them. Exposing himself to the lethal spray of bullets, he fearlessly ran to a point from which he could more effectively fire on the enemy positions. Finding that he still did not have the desired field of fire, he again braved the withering hail of hostile bullets as he dashed to a more advantageous position. From this point he laid down such a devastating hail of fire that the occupants of the bunkers were completely disorganized. Finding his ammunition supply exhausted, Sergeant Stansbury took advantage of the enemy confusion and ran forward, throwing grenades into the enemy hostile position and completely neutralizing it. Meanwhile the company had succeeded in annihilating the enemy emplacements on both flanks. Sergeant Stansbury’s gallant and courageous actions contributed materially to the success of his units mission and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
