After serving as an enlisted man early in World War II, John Stannard was one of two members of the Americal Division to receive an appointment to West Point. He entered and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1946. He retired in 1975 as a U.S. Army Brigadier General. He received awards of the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for service in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) John Edward Stannard (ASN: 20710999), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Colonel Stannard distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in action against the enemy in 1967. Intelligence had reliable information that a large North Vietnamese Army unit was operating in the vicinity Company C received orders to close with Company B to have sufficient firepower should they encounter what proved to be the 2nd North Vietnamese Army Regiment. The companies were sucked into an NVA ambush and took heavy casualties. Lieutenant Colonel Stannard was coordinating support, including a smoke screen between his companies and the North Vietnamese, and at dusk he was dropped off at their night position. He visited each of the platoons, encouraging all, and a head count revealed Company C unable to account for several personnel, including the dog handler and his dog. Lieutenant Colonel Stannard organized a volunteer group to search for the missing personnel and recovered all of them including the dog handler and his dog. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Stannard, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
