Intelligence had reliable information that a large North Vietnamese Army unit was operating in the vicinity Company C received orders to close with Company B to have sufficient firepower should they encounter what proved to be the 2nd North Vietnamese Army Regiment. The companies were sucked into an NVA ambush and took heavy casualties. Lieutenant Colonel Stannard was coordinating support, including a smoke screen between his companies and the North Vietnamese, and at dusk he was dropped off at their night position. He visited each of the platoons, encouraging all, and a head count revealed Company C unable to account for several personnel, including the dog handler and his dog.
