The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Elmer V. Stanley (ASN: US-54036071), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 23d Infantry Regiment, 3id, distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 13 September 1951 in the vicinity of Pia-ri, Korea. On this date Private Stanley’s 75-mm. recoilless rifle platoon was providing supporting fire for a friendly unit assaulting an enemy-held hill. During this action the enemy launched a heavy concentration of mortar fire into his unit’s position, inflicting numerous casualties. Volunteers were needed to go after litters in order that the wounded could be evacuated and given proper medical aid. Private Stanley immediately volunteered, and then ran several hundred yards through the fire-swept area. Upon reaching the point where the litters were located he gathered all he could carry and without any rest, returned through the same field of enemy fire. By his personal concern for the welfare of his comrades and his courageous action, it was possible to evacuate the wounded. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Private Stanley on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
