The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Charles D. Stampley (ASN: 0-61662), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 November 1950, near Majon-ni, Korea, Lieutenant Stampley was leading his platoon with the mission of seizing a position of a ridge occupied by a well dug-in enemy. Before the assault he repeatedly exposed himself to intense enemy rifle and machine gun fire while placing and checking his men. When the time came he, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, led his platoon in a bayonet charge against the enemy through heavy fire and successfully routed the enemy, inflicting heavy casualties and securing the objective. Lieutenant Stampley’s fearless leadership and gallantry are inspirational and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
