Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7689 (July 30, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robin Sherwood Benson (ASN: 0-5337204), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Lieutenant Benson was serving as a platoon leader with Company B, 2d Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), 1st Infantry Division, during a reconnaissance in force operation southeast of Chon Thanh. As the mechanized unit proceeded through the dense jungle, it was suddenly subjected to intense automatic weapons, machine gun and rocket fire by a well-entrenched enemy company. Lieutenant Benson immediately directed his men to advance and reinforce the lead elements. Although momentarily stunned when his vehicle received a direct hit by an enemy rocket, he quickly recovered and continued to supervise his men, employing a portable radio to direct air and artillery fire support. Throughout this time, Lieutenant Benson was fully exposed to the hail of hostile rounds. After assisting the evacuation of several wounded men, he led his platoon in an orderly movement from contact. His exemplary courage and competent leadership while under fire significantly contributed toward limiting American casualties. First Lieutenant Benson’s unquestionable valor while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an insurgent force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
