The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Carrol Anthony St. Martin (ASN: 0-58617), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action near Okchon, Korea, on 1 October 1950. A large enemy force, armed with automatic weapons, attacked his company’s positions and caused the company to withdraw. Seeing that his men were being disorganized by the fury of the attack, Lieutenant St. Martin procured a machine gun and advanced through a hail of withering fire, to the previous defensive position where he poured a volume of deadly fire into the ranks of the advancing enemy. Moving to another exposed position he directed the fire of mortar crews until the enemy force was dispersed with heavy casualties. During this gallant action Lieutenant St. Martin was killed. His courageous actions, complete devotion to duty and outstanding leadership reflect the greatest credit on himself and the United States Infantry.
