The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harry William Spraker, Jr. (ASN: 0-61580), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 4 February 1951, near Chomchog, Korea, Company A was advancing against a strongly defended, well camouflaged enemy position when one of the platoons was suddenly subjected to a barrage of artillery fire, which inflicted numerous casualties. Lieutenant Spraker was mortally wounded during the bombardment, but he refused medical aid, dragged himself to a position where he could direct the reorganization of his dazed and casualty-ridden unit. He also helped in administering hasty first aid to his men. His actions raised the morale of the men in his platoon and enabled them to repulse an enemy counter attack. Lieutenant Spraker’s extreme gallantry, courage, and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
