Headquarters, EIGHTH U.S. Army, Korea, General Orders No. 142 (March 14, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles E. Spencer (ASN: RA-25251769), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action near Hajok-po, Korea. On 22 September 1950, Private Spender’s unit was carrying out the mission of seizing an enemy-held hill in the vicinity of Hajok-po when, about halfway up the hill, his platoon was suddenly subjected to machine-gun fire which inflicted heavy casualties and halted the advance. Private Spender, with complete disregard for his personal safety, single-handedly attacked an enemy machine-gun nest. Using hand grenades and his rifle, he destroyed the enemy weapon and killed the crew, thereby allowing the rest of his platoon to continue their advance and to secure their objective. Private Spencer’s gallant and inspiring action reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
