The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Spero G. Spear (ASN: US-55063953), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date, Company C was attacking hostile forces who were firmly entrenched in well-constructed bunkers. Realizing that his unit was unable to advance until these bunkers were destroyed, Private Spear, with complete disregard for his personal safety, assaulted them throwing hand grenades. He continued this action despite intense hostile automatic weapons and small arms fire and succeeded in destroying several emplacements while inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. During the ensuing action, Private Spear was fatally wounded by hostile fire. His courage and devotion to duty were an inspiration to all who witnessed his act and were instrumental to the success of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Spear on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
