The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Joe D. Spann (ASN: 0-2212077), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. Advancing near Chinju, Korea, on 27 September 1950, Lieutenant Spann’s column was subjected to attack from enemy positions on an adjacent hill. Quickly and effectively, he reorganized and maneuvered his platoon for an assault. Going forward into the intense small arms and automatic weapons fire, he inspired his men to maximum effort so that they successfully overran the hostile emplacements and set the enemy to flight. Lieutenant Spann’s exemplary courage, resolute leadership and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
