Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 371 (August 20, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class John Nunes Sotelo (ASN: ER-38714970), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 6 June 1951, near Harang-dong, Korea, F Company’s Third Platoon was designated as the assault unit in an attack on the company objective, a knoll on top of a steep, rocky, narrow ridge line. As the platoon neared the crest of the ridge, it became subjected to an intense volume of hostile automatic weapons and small arms fire. The unit immediately moved forward to destroy the known enemy positions but Private Sotelo spotted an enemy soldier raking the approaches to the ridge with the vicious fire of a sub-machine gun. Unhesitatingly and voluntarily he proceeded to crawl over the rough terrain in an attempt to remove this hazard to his comrades. He had come within about 20 yards of the enemy soldier when the latter saw him and directed the full volume of fire at Private Sotelo. Severely wounded numerous times, he fell to the ground but exerting a final desperate effort, he flung a hand grenade which blasted the enemy soldier from his position eliminating this danger to the company’s advance. Private Sotelo’s selfless gallantry and bravery reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
