The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert W. Somers (ASN: 0-1882406), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the early morning hours of 13 June 1953, in the vicinity of Surang-ni, Korea, elements of the Regiment were defending strategically valuable Outpost “Harry” when a numerically superior enemy force overran the position. Lieutenant Somers, a platoon leader, immediately organized and directed a counterattack. Although wounded in the ensuing action, he relentlessly led his men up the slope, effectively throwing grenades and firing his weapon. Upon reaching the military crest, he inspired his men to fight still more aggressively to maintain the momentum of the attack. Wounded again, he was rendered unable to go on but continued to give clear, concise instructions in consolidating the perimeter. He remained there, refusing direct evacuation, until given a direct order. When he was finally helped from the hill, he took with him two rolls of communications wire to reestablish a telephone contact between the company and the Battalion. Lieutenant Somers’ outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
