Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 171 (May 29, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Charles Leroy Somers (ASN: ER-6147157), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 21 November 1950, near Majon-ni, Korea, Corporal Somer’s unit was assigned the mission of providing engineer support for a supply convoy. While passing through a narrow valley, the convoy was halted by a road block consisting of an enemy vehicle turned on its side across the road. The enemy, dug-in on both sides of the road, began firing into the convoy, killing a machine gun crew instantly. Corporal Somers, with complete disregard for his personal safety, helped man the machine gun and delivered a withering fire on the enemy positions which enabled many of his comrades to withdraw safely. The convoy was completely overrun and when last seen, he was still feeding the belt of ammunition for the machine gun to help provide cover for the withdrawal of the other troops. Corporal Somers’ gallant and courageous actions during the engagement reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
