The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant John Gary Sollie (ASN: ER-57513671), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 February 1951 near Chipyong-ni, Korea. During the action of Task Force Crombez, Sergeant Sollie courageously engaged the enemy to prevent fanatical attempts to destroy the armor and protect his tank’s blind spot with his own weapon. Although fanatical Chinese soldiers carrying satchel and pole charges assaulted the column in waves, and other foe threw hand grenades from positions along a high bank in an all-out effort to kill the infantry mounted on the tanks, Sergeant Sollie, although wounded, constantly displayed outstanding bravery and eagerness to close with the enemy. Aided by his courageous and selfless devotion to duty, Task Force Crombez smashed through the 4 _ mile defensive position, killing over 500 enemy and arriving at the objective in time to repulse a strong Chinese attack against a friendly regimental combat team. During this action, Sergeant Sollie was mortally wounded by the enemy fire. His gallantry reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
