The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant John F. Sobota (ASN: ER-37797972), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 May 1951, in the vicinity of Panmegi-ri, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Sobota participated in a three-man assault to retake his platoon position which had been overrun by the enemy. Under intense enemy fire, Sergeant Sobota and his two comrades stormed the positions against an overwhelming numerical superiority. This heroic action delayed a subsequent counterattack by the massed enemy long enough to permit Sergeant Sobota’s platoon to reorganize and evacuate its numerous wounded who otherwise would have been exposed to certain death or capture. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Sobota reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
