Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 57 (March 5, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Thaddeus R. Sobieski (ASN: 0-65352), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 30 November 1952, the first platoon of Company E, 2d Battalion, of which Lieutenant Sobieski led the assault squad, was assigned the mission of attacking enemy positions in the vicinity of Sanggadan-dol, Korea, and capturing prisoners for intelligence purposes. Nearing the objective, they were subjected to an intense barrage of enemy small arms, grenade and heavy weapons fire. Upon seeing a fellow officer seriously wounded, he dashed across the hostile terrain and brought the man to a position of comparative safety. Suffering from a wrist wound sustained while aiding the casualty, he returned to the fire swept area in search of the support squad to lead them to safety but was forced to withdraw by the heavy enemy fire. Upon returning to friendly positions and learning that the officer whom he had previously rescued was once more in danger of being overrun by enemy forces, he immediately formed a small group to again evacuate him to a position of safety. Although it was daybreak and the foe could observe every move, he advanced with the rescue squad and evacuated the officer. Lieutenant Sobieski’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty were instrumental in saving the life of a fellow officer and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
