Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 305 (July 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Earl W. Snow (ASN: 0-1182965), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 10 June 1951, near Oege, Korea, Lieutenant Snow, attached as a forward artillery observer to Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, was with that unit when it was subjected to intense enemy fire as it advanced across flat open terrain toward hostile positions. Despite the hail of enemy bullets falling in the area, Lieutenant Snow calmly directed artillery fire to support the rifle company, permitting it to continue its advance. The unit had moved only a few hundred yards further when a stream of fire from concealed enemy automatic weapons pinned it down. Unable to see these new positions from his present location, Lieutenant Snow voluntarily quit his former place and, alternately running and crawling through approximately 900 yards of the bullet-swept terrain, crossed to a position with the infantry assault platoons. There, only a short distance from the enemy weapons, he exposed himself numerous times to direct friendly artillery fire which furnished the necessary support allowing the infantry to successfully secure its objective. Lieutenant Snow’s outstanding gallantry and steadfast application of artillery tactics reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
