The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Dillon (Dillion) Snell (ASN: 0-62230), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 15 September 1950, when his mortar platoon was supporting the defense of a rifle company position near Kidong, Korea, Lieutenant Snell constantly exposed himself to hostile mortar and small arms fire to adjust the fire of his mortars. When the position was assaulted by the enemy he carried ammunition to the gun positions. Despite a painful face wound, he led the rifle platoon which had lost its leader to counterattack the enemy. Lieutenant Snell’s conspicuous heroism, exemplary initiative and outstanding leadership are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
