The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Warren Chadwick Smith (ASN: US-55191438), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 October 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Company G, engaged in attacking a heavily fortified enemy position, was temporarily halted by a numerically superior enemy force. Corporal Smith, an automatic rifleman, was on the right flank of the 2d Platoon when the enemy suddenly opened fire and directed a vicious counterattack on their sector. With complete disregard for intense enemy small arms, mortar and demolition charges, he moved to a position where he could bring effective fire on the enemy in a communication trench and opened fire on the enemy, inflicting several casualties and demoralizing them with his devastating fire. He fearlessly continued to pour effective fire into the enemy positions until he was killed by an enemy grenade. His actions were directly responsible for the success of the platoon in their efforts to hold their objective and contributed greatly to the success of the entire company in the accomplishment of its mission. The courageous actions displayed by Corporal Smith was an inspiration to all who observed him and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
