Department of the Army, General Orders No. 10 (1990)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Craig D. Wideman, United States Army, for heroism on 9 August 1989, while assigned to 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. On that date, serving as a Medic covering an airborne operation at a Sicily Drop Zone, he risked his life in order to provide medical care to victims of an aircraft crash. Disregarding the danger posed by the flaming C-130, he entered the aircraft to rescue a disabled survivor and then assisted in the treatment of the survivors. Specialist Wideman’s calm, extraordinary composure and quick response in the face of danger was directly responsible for the life of at least one of the crewmen and reflects great credit on him and the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
