The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Stanley E. Smith (ASN: RA-28114760), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On the morning of 9 March 1952, a patrol from Company F was dispatched to search for a man missing from a patrol on the previous night near Chongia-chon, Korea. Advancing to a point within 200 yards of an enemy stronghold, Private Smith, the platoon medic, volunteered to advance alone and search the forward terrain for the missing man. Locating a figure lying on a steep slope immediately below a hostile position, he cautiously moved forward to make an identity, but before reaching the objective, he was subjected to a withering hail of small-arms fire. Undaunted, he continued on to a point from which he could identify the figure as the body of the missing man. After reporting back to the patrol leader, Private Smith volunteered to accompany another man in removing the body of their comrade to prevent its falling into the clutches of the foe. As they made their way to the body, they were bombarded with grenade and mortar fire but stopping only momentarily, they fearlessly continued on to a point near the still form. While his comrade provided covering fire, Private Smith dashed over the hazardous, fire swept terrain to the side of the body. Staying close to the ground, he slowly inched toward his comrade dragging the lifeless form with him. With mortar shells coming dangerously close to him, Private Smith finally reached the position where his comrade was providing covering fire and, together they successfully evacuated the body. Private Smith’s conspicuous gallantry and unwavering determination reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
