    Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 12 (January 9, 1952), Amended by General Orders No. 18 (1952) & 85 (1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class [then Private] Sanford John Smith (ASN: US-55065768), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date the platoon of which Private Smith was a member was assaulting well fortified enemy positions. During the ensuing action the friendly unit was pinned down by intense hostile grenades and automatic weapons fire and was ordered to withdraw to form a perimeter of defense for the night. Private Smith, though painfully wounded, volunteered to remain behind and face the fanatical enemy forces to provide covering fire for the withdrawing troops. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Smith tenaciously held his position, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy, until his comrades had completed their mission. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Smith on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
