    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph S. Smith (ASN: RA-13307541), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 5 September 1950, when the company outpost positions in the vicinity of Naende, Korea, were attacked by numerically superior hostile forces, Corporal Smith maintained his position. Holding fire until a large group of enemy had advanced to within fifteen yards of his position, he fired into the group with his automatic rifle, killed fifteen enemy and repulsed the attack. Corporal Smith’s calm courage and gallant devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
